ما اعدام اسماعيل محمدی را محکوم می کنيمEsmail Mohamadi has been executedWe have just received the sad news of Esmail Mohamadi's execution by the Iranian regime. Iranian Revolutionary Socialists' League, while extending its condolences to the family of Esmail, utterly condemns this barbaric act of this brutal and callous dictatorship. Once again this regime has shown everybody its true nature. Behind the 'revolutionary' and 'anti-imperialist' posturing, and the 'reforms' and 'civil society' rhetoric, stands one of the most vicious tyrannies in history. Esmail Mohamadi, born 4 June 1965, was the father of five children and had been a 'peshmerga' guerrilla of the Kurdish Komala organisation for a number of years. He was arrested by the forces of the Islamic Republic on 1 Sept 2002 in Bookan, in Iranian Kurdistan, and then sentenced to death in one of the regime's courts. Since then many human rights organisations, includin g Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, trade unionists and others have lobbied the United Nations and similar bodies to revoke his death sentence and secure his release. This campaign had managed to keep up the pressure on the regime for over two years. We therefore believe that the timing of his execution is highly significant. The Iranian regime is making Esmail an example. Following the revolt in many Kurdish town during July and August, which were provoked by the Iranian regime's racist policies towards the Kurds, the Kurdish people, and the Iranian masses generally, needed to be 'taught a lesson' about the consequences of standing up to despotism and to roll back the gains of the movement over the past year. The masses, however, know full well about the methods of this regime. They have seen it in action since it crushed the revolutionary movement in 1981 and have been developing their own methods against the repression: organisation and unity. We are certain that with international solidarity and the development of a clear programme for overthrowing this regime, and the social base it stands on, the masses will be victorious. The death of Esmail Mohamadi is a big tragedy for his family and all of us. The Kurdish movement, however, is based on the Kurds' need for equal economic opportunities and their national rights. That is why the state murder of Esmail will not cow the movement and will instead convince more people of the necessity of overthrowing this rotten regime and its social base.
